DEMO Africa 2018: Startups from Morocco and Ghana Are Highest on Finalists’ List
The build-up to this year’s DEMO Africa finals, slated to take place in Casablanca, Morocco have been abuzz with activities — especially the innovation roadshows to city tours.
In line with the event’s objective, DEMO Africa has just shortlisted 30 startups eligible to take part in the 2018 edition of the annual conference.
The selected startups would be from Africa’s crop of innovators and problem-solvers, who are looking inwardly for solutions to some of the continent’s problems and expanding the frontiers of entrepreneurship, technology, and social impact.
This year’s edition of DEMO Africa will take place in North Africa for the first time. This year will be the seventh edition of the annual event in Casablanca this October.
The selected finalists will get the opportunity to present their technologies and solutions at the finals. Below are the selected startups grouped by country. As it appears, Morocco and Kenya have the highest number of finalists.
Morocco
Atlan Space: this startup has broken the boundaries of aeronautics with Artificial Intelligence to sustain ocean ecosystems using distributed deep learning technologies capable of classification, detection, identification, and tracking.
The patented technology enables networks of aerial vehicles guided by Artificial Intelligence to scan large marine areas for environmental threats.
Casky: is the world’s first Blockchain based, Artificial Intelligence platform offering people globally a chance to earn an appreciative asset/income by driving, while rewarding safe driving more so.
This disruptive model is in conjunction with our efforts of creating a new, worldwide paradigm for insurers, vehicle manufacturers, P2P vehicle-based companies, and municipalities to connect with customers/drivers, in real-time.
Kourtim: is a logistics management system that provides real-time monitoring of all the stages of road freight transport.
Moldiag: is a new startup first of its kind in Morocco and Africa that develops and produces molecular diagnostic kits for the detection and the quantification of several diseases such as cancer and infectious diseases.
Ghana
Devless: they provide an easy to use data store for web and mobile data applications. Easily extend the functionalities of an app with custom rules on actions to be automatically performed after the data is received.
Complete Farmer: provides remarkable and innovative agribusiness solutions to its users so as to enhance productivity, increase profitability and help them gain a competitive advantage across the agricultural value chain.
The platform also aid to facilitate, build capacity and business analysis for the production and translation of high-quality farmer training.
Redbird: this platform partners with pharmacies and licensed chemical shops to bring users proven rapid test technology for chronic and acute conditions, enabling them to expand their business, and giving patients a convenient way to monitor their health, wherever they are.
Qualitrace: is a traceability and verification company that uses track and trace technology to trace products. The company currently provides authentication or verification services to the prevalence of fake or counterfeit agrochemicals (farm inputs) in the agriculture industry.
QualiTrace also provides similar anti-counterfeiting services in the pharmaceutical, textile, and beverages industries.
Kenya
Cloud9XP: is a web and mobile platform where experience providers list their leisure experiences for exposure and manage bookings across travel categories and styles.
Sote: this software platform bringing the B2B transport sector into the information logistics age and achieving seamless instantaneous coordination.
Zipora: is a smart luggage innovation with a patent-pending zipper that is breach-proof, and a security device that makes any zipped luggage smart. The smart device comes with a GPS tracker, a tensioner, and a vibration sensor to monitor luggage handling and breach attempts.
Egypt
Chefaa Medicine Delivery: a vision-driven company to facilitate patient’s journey to order/schedule & have medicine delivered in just 3 clicks. Locate medicine in a click by the platform real-time search engine.
In addition, the platform matches donations & help the less fortunate get their medicine.
Niotek: is a startup that joins hardware and Software and applies them to the Internet of Things (IoT) to help companies make better, faster decisions about their manufacturing operations.
Niotek’s analytics platform, purpose-built for discrete and process manufacturing, uses AI, machine learning, and advanced analytics to help address critical challenges in quality and productivity throughout the enterprise.
VoxEra: has solved the problem of roaming bills. It is the time you can travel freely with no restrictions with your family and friends without incurring any roaming fee.
South Africa
Brayfoil Technologies: is a patented wing design that is a first in aerodynamic engineering. The technology allows planes to take off in a shorter distance, fly further and faster on less fuel and improves safety by a massive margin.
Lula: is a mobility-as-a-service platform that connects stakeholders across cities, municipalities, and countries.
Regenize: is a recycling collections company which rewards people for recycling and also educates them about the benefits of recycling.
Tunisia
Dabchy: this community-inspired marketplace allows its users to share their personal style identities and follow each other.
Dabchy launched Android & iOS mobile applications for the platform that offer a smooth social-network-like experience and enable users to communicate within the applications with each other. The apps also let users pay without leaving them if they decide to buy something.
Hawkar: is a smart electric car for physically handicapped persons.
Toufoula: is a multi-language Ludo-educational platform offered in Arabic, French, and English for young children.
The mobile app is linked to a smart printed magazine by augmented reality with the aim of reducing children’s addiction to screens.
Nigeria
Accounteer: a smart cloud accounting online software platform that manages the finances of its users. The software allows users, who are business owners to create digital invoices, keep track of expenses, and monitor the profitability of their organisation.
The software allows users to create invoices in just a few clicks and send them to their clients digitally.
Termii: helps its user’s secure repeat customers by sending personalised emails and SMS through multiple channels.
According to the site, the mission is to help African businesses leverage customer retention tools for business growth.
The platform verifies and automatically segment customers contacts directly from a user account.
Cote D’ Ivoire
Maurice Communication: a wearable technology company that provides health-tech solutions targeted towards emergency response, data collection and information dissemination for medical and emergency personnel.
Wefly Agri: is the Ivorian company that provides user-friendly, drone-enabled technologies and services developed exclusively for agriculture in Africa. The platform empowers farmers and gives them new ways to increase yields, reduce costs and maximize productivity.
Also providing hassle-free access to accurate information to enhance transparency, and improve crop management.
Senegal
ADN Corp: is building applications to help African companies to improve their sales, marketing, and finance operations with decision support analytics system.
Algeria
Smarth: provides innovative analytical and predictive solutions for any problem involving massive amounts of data.
Cameroun
Zuoix: is an SMS based car security system that does not require any form of internet connectivity to locate, immobilize and geofence cars.
Botswana
Tempest Gold: The Tempest Gold app allows users to search for properties, connect directly with the buyer/seller and eliminate the middleman.
